Interesting Facts
In the final of the Basketball Cup Winners' Cup, which took place in 1968 in the Kallimarmaro Stadium between Athens’ AEK and Prague’s Slavia, the 60,000 spectators marked a world record for spectator attendance in Basketball matches, valid to this day.
The Panathinaiko Stadium, widely known as “Kallimarmaro”, is the stadium where the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 were held. Even in ancient years, the area where the Panathinaiko (or Panathenian) Stadium stands today was largely used to host the Panathenean Games, festival events that were held to honour the Greek goddess Athena (the Goddess of wisdom, skills and warfare and protector of the city of Athens in ancient Greece).
Historians considered it to be “a miracle above description that it had almost exhausted the marble quarries of mountain Penteli” (Pausanias). It is situated in the heart of the Greek capital, Athens and was first reconstructed in 1895 for the purpose of becoming the main stadium to host the 1896 Olympic Games.
During the Olympic Games the Stadium will have a 34,500 capacity for the Marathon finish and 7,500 for Archery.

Day 10 - Preview
Nathan Baggaley will head into his heats reasonably confident after finishig on top after the World Cup series. He came third in the K1 1000m at the World Championships last year after leading for 800 metres. He joined Fouhy and Van Koeverden in a world first being the only time that three non-european paddlers have medalled. Nathan has finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd in all international events since June last year. Whilst has not competed in this event at the Olympics based on his current form he should do very well.
Our K2 1000m crew consists of Daniel Collins a 4-times Olympian with a bronze and silver already to his name & David Rhodes an Olympic debutante. Daniel and David have proved themselves this year, qualifying in Europe and backing this up with some solide results at the World Cup events. The crew look strong and are certainly a chance at a medal.
The Aussie K4 crew consists of Chantal Meek, Amanda Rankin, Kate Barclay and Lisa Oldenhof all of whom are Olympic first-timers. The girls performed well at the tough European qualifiers to finish 4th booking themselves a place in Athens, however they will need to pull out a career best to medal in this event against some very strong competitiors.
The C1 Men's event will also prove to be a tough competition with reigning world champ Andreas Dittmer and Martin Doktor showing good form in the lead up to this event. Martin Marinov will paddle for Australia in the event having previously won a bronze medal in the 1988 Games whilst competing for Bulgaria. Martin has been on the international scene for a long time. He gained Australian Citizenship in 2003 and has competed for Australia since 2001.
