Tips and Hints | Open Canoe - Paddling Downwind

Author - BCU Canoe and Kayak Handbook 3rd Edition

Paddling Downwind - Solo

This is nice and easy for the solo paddler. They move their weight sternward. The bow becomes lighter, presenting a greater surface to the wind. The whole canoe acts as a weather vane and turns downwind. The steering becomes easy. As the wind picks up and waves build, the canoe will start to surf. Everything becomes fun but the canoe becomes less stable and it is well worth kneeling to keep the weight low.

Paddling Downwind - Tandem

Once again the weight shift is critical. Either the load or bow paddler must be moved back in the boat.
