Tips & Hints: Pre Paddling Warm Up

Author:  Australian Canoeing Education Assistant

As the winters days remain cold an appropriate warm up is even more essential and should not be overlooked before any strenuous activity. A proper warm up prepares the body for sudden exertions and minimize the risk of injury. Even stretching should not be executed before a thorough warm up.

Setting up a pre-paddling routine as a precursor to going out on the water is very helpful. Some light warm-up exercises for at least 15 min. is a good start to the warm up.

This could involve a brisk walk, particularly uphill, with arms swinging or if the water is warm a short swim. If there are a number of paddlers together, a short game of frisbee of any other group activity can be fun and supports the warm up of the body with added enjoyment.

Once the warm up is completed it is time for some stretching. Start with some body stretches without bouncing to increase the range of movement. Extend gently to the limit of comfort and hold this position for about 15 seconds before relaxing. Useful exercises can include exercises for the neck, spine, hamstrings, triceps, shoulder, quadriceps, trunk rotation and side.

After this initial stretching on land, it is recommended to continue with exercises in the boat, first on the land and then later on the water. Performing exercises before getting afloat takes advantage of being able to check the range of motion in paddling gear in the boat.

After you get on the water it is a good idea to go for bit of a paddle to settle into the boat and afterwards do some stretching. On the water exercises provide also a confidence-building tool for new or nervous paddlers. There are heaps of useful exercises that anyone can do without the risk of capsizing.

Boat stretches on land can involve:

  • Reaching the stern with the left hand on the right-hand side of the boat and the other way round
  • Reaching the back deck whilst extending fully backwards over the deck
  • Reaching the front deck whilst extending fully forwards over the deck

Boat stretches on the water can include:

  • Pressing the left blade against the right-hand side of the bow and vice versa
  • Pressing the left blade against the right-hand side of the stern and vice versa
  • Stretching forward in the boat as far as possible
  • Stretching backwards in the boat as far as possible

All these warm up might take about 30 minutes, but it is time well spent.
