Tips & Hints: Competition's Checklist For The Competition

Author:  Australian Canoeing Education Assistant

Proper preparation is a pre-requisite for a successful participation in any competition. Well-prepared competitors, not only in terms of fitness, do not have to hurry in the last minute and therefore can focus confidentially on their event and it’s challenges. For there it is fairly useful to have a checklist consisting all the items that have to be considered. The following list is a sample of such a checklist:

Before the competition:

  • Check the time of enrolment for the competition
  • Check the payment for the competition
  • Check your equipment
  • Check you buy the food you need
  • Check the map to the venue (consider peak traffic and street works)
  • Check the weather to ensure choosing the proper sportswear

During the competition:

  • Check the program and all latest information on the competition
  • Check the course and monitor specialities and difficult areas, in particular in long distance races (damns, turns, portages, etc.)
  • Check that you consume enough and proper food and fluids at the right time
  • Check the start time of preceding races, if there is a delay
  • Check the equipment, everything tight and properly fixed
  • Check that you got the right boat number
  • Check the time for a warm up

After competition:

  • Check that you gathered all your gear
  • Check that you fill up your energy stores and fluid balance

Website of the Week:  Sea Kayaking Greece

This company has made seakayaking round the Greek Isles accessible to paddlers since 1999- previously you had to fly in your own boat because it was near impossible to find proper sea kayaks for hire in Greece. If your searching for fun in the sun, go no further.
