SUPPORT THE AUSTRALIAN CANOE MARATHON TEAM!!!!!

Our professional athletes are constantly battling to cover the financial burden of competing at the top level. If you would like to help our athletes continue to take that next step please take part in their 2005 fundraising program - the more support our community can offer the better the chance our athletes have of reaching their dreams.

This fundraising program aims to help offset the many expenses incurred by the athletes. This can include airfares, accommodation, uniforms competition fees, tour management and administration costs.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Tips & Hints: Words of Wisdom from Richard Fox - Australian Canoeing High Perfromance Director

For young athletes wanting to strike it big on the competition scene you can't go past a few basic principles:

Set clear goals for yourself - Be realistic here but don't be shy. If you want to be on the national team or even be Olympic or World Champion one day say it out loud to yourself and then share this dream with someone close to you - now you are accountable!

Model yourself on athletes who have "been there and done that" - Find out as much as you can from athletes and coaches around you about the key steps other athletes have taken on their pathway to success. Again, don't be shy because there aren't too many books, DVDs or websites with secrets on how to be the best in canoeing. You have to be smart, ask the right questions and put it into context. Remember that everyone was a beginner once and looking at the early stages of someone's career can be as revealing as the latest workouts they are doing.

Invest in your technique from the word go -Developing good form, posture and stability early on will mean you can get the more horsepower out of your motor.

Be committed - If you are dedicated to your goals and prepared to work hard you will make huge progress. There are very few shortcuts, so be prepared to put in the hours along the way and give up some of your distractions.

Work on your head game - Ask any competitor at the top what makes the difference on competition day and they will almost certainly point to their head. Self belief, self confidence and mental toughness in competition are key qualities manifested in top athletes - so start thinking the good stuff! And don't forget life after sport. Most top athletes are smart enough to rest and recover at key points of their preparation and are able to balance their training with work, study and other areas of their life.
