An exiting ICF Canoe Marathon season is over, and to the ICF Canoe Marathon Committee this marks a milestone in the development of our sport.
We have confirmed a new course concept that is generally accepted with the purpose of making our competitions more attractive to spectators and media. This concept now allows us to enter regatta course type venues with all the benefits of existing structures. Also the new 3 day competition program seemed to work satisfactorily. All these current innovations will of course be evaluated by the committee seeking for further improvements.
The ICF Congress allowed us to expand our championships programme with “under 23” classes, and the participation in the World Championships this year could indicate that this was the right way to go.
The general participation at the World Championships with 31 national teams was very well received considering the global financial crisis that certainly hits the world of sport, in particular the non Olympic disciplines which suffer even more than they used to in the past. The financial problems have become clear when we look at the World Cups, and one of the challenges we face is to try to lower the costs to participate in these events.
Overall, we feel that we are on the right track. We are now in addition focusing on presenting our sport to the public and media. We are trying new ways with competition commentary, and we wish to combine this with the big board or television screens in strategic places where also intermediate times and informative graphics are to be shown. Life streaming from the competition on the internet is another thing which we successfully tried this year, all this of course with the purpose of showing to the world how exiting Canoe Marathon is.
In the coming months we will carry on working with these matters trying to accomplish as much as possible before we meet again next year

CANOE MARATHON RULES
We wish to draw your attention to the ICF Canoe Marathon Rules. The current rules can be downloaded from the ICF web site:
We are happy to inform that this year we had no reports or protests concerning infractions of rules concerning wash hanging. We did, however, decide to disqualify a C2 for deliberately blocking the way for another crew in the portage. We wish to underline that such an action by paddlers is an infraction of the rules and will be dealt with as such. We therefore recommend team leaders to inform paddlers of this in order to avoid problems in the future.
NOMINATION OF OFFICIALS FOR THE 2010 ICF COMPETITIONS
We wish to remind you to announce in due time your candidature to your national federation in order to be nominated for next years competitions. According to art. 11.3 of the ICF Canoe Marathon Competition Rules the time limit for National Federations to submit their nominations to the Chair of the Canoe Marathon Committee (with a copy to the ICF headquarters) is 1st January 2010.

A stroke of luck

Sprint kayaker Matthew Goble dreams of representing his country at the London Olympics in 2012 and his chances of qualifying for the event just got a whole lot better.
A decision by kayaking officials to shorten the distance of the individual sprint event from 500m to 200m at Olympic level has left the 20-year-old in the box seat to get Australia’s sole position in the competition.
"I've always been really fast over short distances," Goble said.
"It definitely suits me better than the 500m and the 1000m."
Goble displayed all of his speed and power by winning gold at the national championships in the event in March.
He followed that up by winning a silver medal at a World Cup event in Hungary in June in his first outing for the senior national team.
"That was the moment when I really started believing I could do this."
"The guy that won (German Jonas Ems) was the 2007 world champ."
Standing in between Goble and an Olympic berth is Beijing K1 500m gold medallist Ken Wallace. Goble is yet to compete against Wallace over the 200m distance but is confident he has what it takes.
"I think I can get him. Over the 500m he’s known more as a big finisher rather than a strong starter like I am."
Goble received a boost on the eve of the local season when he was awarded a Sport of Australia Hall of Fame scholarship.
Under the program, which was introduced in 2006 to help young Australian athletes reach the highest levels in their sports, Goble will receive $5000 and mentoring support from dual Olympic rowing gold medallist Mike McKay.
"I met him on the night at the Sport of Australia awards, he’s obviously an Olympic legend being part of the Oarsome Foursome. "
"If I ever need to speak to him about anything I can get in touch with him."
The decision to shorten the sprint events from 500m to 200m was ratified by the International Olympic Committee in September.
It is aimed at making the sport more spectator-friendly.

Jo Brigden-Jones and Murray Stewart were awarded the Physical Education Academic Excellence Award and the University of Sydney Academic Excellence Award at last night's NSWIS annual Awards Dinner
2008 saw Murray Stewart finish off a Bachelor of Design in Architecture at the University of Sydney, where he maintained an average grade of 81.5%. In 2009 Stewart commenced a Masters of Architecture. In semester one, Stewart completed three subjects attaining a distinction, credit and a pass and was awarded the Sydney University Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship.
Jo Brigden-Jones is completing a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Technology. During the year she has managed to maintain a credit average. Brigden-Jones won the UTS Union Sportswoman of the Year award, and was awarded a ‘Full Blue’ in 2008. At the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, where she competed in the ‘A’ final of four events, the first time an Australian woman has achieved such a feat.
Australian Canoeing would like to congratulate both Jo and Murray on their success and wish them luck in their future endeavours.

If you are interested in being involved as a Coach/Manager/Official in a 2010 National Team then you can complete the online application form.
Although being a Team Official can be hard work the rewards are tremendous and you often get to travel to new and exciting places.
By completing the form you are not committing to the Team but are just expressing your interest. AC has made the form fairly generic to enable you to be able to specify multiple teams and/or multiple disciplines if you want.
Australian Canoeing conducted their 2009 Annual General Meeting and a Strategic Forum over the
weekend 13-15th November at Sydney Olympic Park.
The busy weekend commenced with the Annual General Meeting where Danielle Woodward OAM was duly re-elected to the position of President. Joining Danielle on the Board for the first time was Keith Lyons while Shelley Oates-Wilding stood down from her position as a Board member.
Woodward, a former Olympic silver medallist, said “I am very pleased to be re-elected for a 2nd term and while it is sad that Shelley has stepped down, Keith will definitely bring plenty of knowledge to the table”.
She went on to say that the future looks promising for Australian Canoeing. “This weekend is all about getting together and working with our members to come up with strategies that will help Australian Canoeing move forward into the next phase”, Woodward explained.
Members from each state in Australia were represented as they were presented with information on items such as future directions, the organisation’s strategic plan, insurance as well as competitive and recreational paddling.
Chief Executive Officer, Greg Doyle said “The strategic forum was conducted to give all of our members an opportunity to have input as to how the organisation is run”.
Australian Canoeing is establishing itself as one of the most successful sporting organisations in the country and has worked hard in re-building its foundations after some hurdles in recent years.
“These are very exciting times for Australian Canoeing and while there are always going to be challenges in how we run our sport, it is very exciting to see the high level of enthusiasm, expertise and determination coming from our State’s and members”, Mr Doyle said.
The strategic forum concluded on Sunday afternoon with Australian Canoeing looking ahead to a rigorous two – five years as it looks to deliver on its strategic business plan and improve communications to its growing membership base.

Australian Canoeing (AC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Grant as the new Chair of the Slalom Technical Committee.
Peter takes over from Sue Lyons who after serving as Chair for four years decided to stand down.
AC Chief Executive, Greg Doyle says that although he is sorry to see Sue step down, he sees a bright future for the committee.
“All of us at Australian Canoeing would like to thank Sue for the tremendous job she has done a over the years. She has established a very strong base for the committee from which Peter can build upon”, Mr. Doyle said.
Peter has had a long history of involvement in the sport at club, state and national level and AC President, Danielle Woodward, was delighted to be able to appoint someone of Peter’s experience to the role.
“Peter has been a key figure in the slalom community and we look forward to working with him to grow the sport in the coming years” Ms. Woodward said.
Australian Canoeing 60th Annual Awards Dinner

Awards included the Olegas Truchanas Canoeing Award, presented for only the 3rd time, posthumously, to Andrew McAuley.
The 2009 Australian Canoeing Annual Awards Dinner was held last night, 14th November 2009, at the Pullman Hotel, Sydney Olympic Park.
Over 70 attendees, including Helen Brownlee OAM, President Danielle Woodward OAM, CEO Greg Doyle, ICF Vice-President Richard Fox and a host of canoeing and kayaking stars, joined MC Shelly Oats-Wilding in celebrating 60 years of paddling.
The high performing athletes of 2009 included Male and Female Canoeists of the Year proudly supported by Chifley Hotels, Ken Wallace and Rosalyn Lawrence. Ken won a bronze medal in the K1 500m event at the Sprint world Championships in Canada, while Rosalyn won the ICF World Cup Series in the C1W and a silver in the C1W at the 2009 World Championships in Spain.
The Olegas Truchanas Canoeing Award was presented for only the 3rd time, posthumously, to Andrew McAuley. Andrew, in 2003, made the first non-stop kayak crossing of the Bass Straight. In 2006 he led an expedition in the Australian Antarctic Territory where they paddled over 800km within the Antarctic Circle. In 2007 he attempted the first solo kayak crossing of the Tasman Sea, a passage of water known for its violent waves, often reaching over 12 metres in height.

After the Tassie Champs on Dec 12th/13th the NCE has requested 4 days of water for training from 14th to 18th Dec.
The NCE is running a training camp for the NCE squad over these four days, however the water will be accessible to anyone who will be racing at selection in March. It is important to notify Mike Druce on slalomcoach(@)ozemail.com.au if you intend to use the water during these 4 days so the training times can be coordinated. We encourage anyone considering selection in 2010 to take the opportunity to train at Bradys.

Final Wildwater World Cup Race A Spectator Bonanza

The weather and the setting for today’s sixth and final race of the 2009 Hydro Tasmania ICF Wildwater World Cup provided picture‐perfect conditions for last rapid sprint of the event.
An estimated one to two thousand spectators were treated to world‐class paddling action as Cataract Gorge, Launceston turned on a spectacular spring day as the backdrop to the wrap up for the World Cup series.
The four winners of the 2009 Wildwater World Cup were finally established after today’s final race with the World Cup trophies going to Jessica Oughton of Britain taking out the Women’s K1 class on here 21st birthday, Slovenians Nejc Znidarcic of taking the Men’s K1 and Jost Zakrajsek taking the Men’s C1. The final trophy went to Knippling and Schmitz of Germany who rounded off a successful World Cup series campaign in the Men’s C2 event.
Race six winners today in the Womens’s K1 were led by Britain’s Hannah Brown who enjoyed a narrow win over compatriot and race favourite, Jessica Oughton with German, Sabine Fusser in third position. Best placed of the Australians was Susie Wharton who was finally able to compete today following injury and who delighted the local crowd to take ninth position.
In the Men’s K1, Austrian, Gerhard Schmid finally tasted success by winning his first race of the series, with Jon Schofield of Britain taking the silver and Nejc Znidarcic of Slovenia taking third spot. Repeating team mate Wharton’s performance, Australian Dan Hall took ninth position in today’s final race.
Znidarcic’s countryman, Yost Zakrajsek took the gold medal in the Men’s C1 class, with only the finest of winning margins separating him from second‐place getter, Czech, Lukas Novosad and bronze medalist, Yann Claude Pierre of France.
The Men’s C2 results for race six saw success go to German team, Knippling and Schmitz to help seal their claim on the World Cup trophy with second place going to British team, Wright and Christie with Czechs, Lukas Uncajtik and Marek Rygel taking third.
Organisers of the 2009 Hydro Tasmania ICF Wildwater World Cup, Canoe Tasmania, are very pleased with the way the overall series has unfolded and were grateful for the endorsements provided by both the Australian Canoeing and the International Canoe Federations (ICF).
Race Director and Chair of Canoe Tasmania, John Borojevic said that the ICF have been extremely pleased with the way the World Cup series has been run in Tasmania and were very supportive of future World class events being run here.
“We are very grateful for the ICF’s terrific feedback. We might take a rest for now and think about the options sometime in the future.
“We do owe a great debt of thanks to our naming‐rights sponsor, Hydro Tasmania for their help and support throughout the series. Forestry Tasmania have also provided great support along with so many other sponsors and volunteers. We couldn’t have done it without them.”
WADA Publishes Revised International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions

Montreal, November 3, 2009 – Following approval by its Executive Committee, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has now published the revised International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions (ISTUE). This Standard will take effect on January 1, 2010.
The ISTUE was revised as a result of the adoption of the 2010 Prohibited List. The ISTUE had to be amended to accommodate some of the changes to the List to be implemented on January 1, 2010, in particular the removal of inhaled salbutamol from the List. This resulted in the deletion of Annex 1 and of the special provision in relation to Beta-2 agonists of the ISTUE.
Under the 2010 List, salbutamol, salmeterol, platelet-derived preparations, and glucocorticosteroids administered by some routes will require a Declaration of Use. In order to avoid frequent changes to the ISTUE, the name of the substances that require a Declaration of Use is no longer included in the ISTUE, but rather is clearly indicated in the List.
Furthermore, in order to simplify the ISTUE, a number of provisions were rewritten or reordered, maintaining however all the key principles of the Standard.

Southern Cup Slalom Championships 2009

The Southern Cup Slalom Championships is series of existing and new events designed to foster slalom racing in the Southern Hemisphere. The events are organized and advertised in order to promote racing in Australia, New Zealand and to the international community.
The event is supported through Canoes Plus and the Canoes Plus Racing Team, Dagger, Liquidlife, the Victorian Slalom Committee, Slalom New Zealand, the Southern Trust and Canoe Tasmania.

1.Entrants must be financial members of a Canoe Club/Association affiliated with Australian Canoeing (AC) or registered with an international Canoe Federation. All racers who compete in the events will be considered for points for the overall trophy.
2.Entries for Southern Cup 3 and the Southern Cup Final are via the online entry system on the Australian Canoeing (AC) website. For entries to Race 1 and 2 contacts are listed above
3.There will be no refund of entry fees should it be necessary to cancel the event – either prior to or during the course of the competition – as a result of factors outside the control of the event organisers.
4.Age classification will be in accordance with ICF rules; that is based on January 1st 2009.
5.Classes: K1 will be offered in Masters, Open, 23 years and under, 16 years and under for men and women. C1 will be offered in Open, 16 years and under for men and women, and C2 will be offered in Open, 16 years and under for men.
Rules
1.The event shall be conducted under the Competition Rules nominated by the AC Slalom Committee (www.canoe.org.au) unless specifically stated in this document.
2.Placing will be determined by the best of two runs for all ages in Southern Cup 1 or 2 unless otherwise specified by the race organizer. There will be no qualification or semi-final preliminary events. In Southern Cup 3 and the Southern Cup Final, each run will be considered as a single event.
3.No allowances for boat sharing will be made within a class
Awards
1.Medals will be awarded for all classes as listed on the entry forms, and as determined by each organizing committee.
2.Trophies shall be awarded on a points basis where the individual has competed in at least two events of the Championships. Best three results will count towards championship points. Points will be awarded as follows:
1st – 0 points
2nd- 2 points
3rd – 3 points
4th – 4 points and so on…..
Where there is a tie, the best result in the Southern Cup Final will be used to break the tie.

Online Entries are now open for Grand Prix 1 to be held at West Lakes, SA on 11-13 December.
Entries close at 5pm on 15th November. Only late entries, accompanied by the late entry fee, will be accepted after this date. However, the Race Committee reserves the right to decline any entry received after the closing date.
All entries must be paid for in full on or before 29th November to be eligible to compete.
You must be a financial member of Australian Canoeing (or verified with an international club). Your entry will not be processed if you are not a member.
Please note that at this regatta it will not be possible to compete in multiple age categories due to the number of races that need to be scheduled. If you enter multiple age categories, the youngest will be considered your preferred category.

The selection policy for the 2010 World Championships has been released
Australian Canoeing has released the provisional summary information for Slalom Teams selection for 2010
Selection criteria have been developed for each team as a result of consultation between the National Performance Director, the National Head Coach and the National Technical Committee. The final criteria will be submitted to the AC Board for approval by a date to be confirmed.
The attached information is provisional summary information only and does not constitute actual selection criteria.

2009 is my biggest year yet, I fly out to BC for a creeking and freestyle training before worlds then after worlds in Switzerland I am heading to the rivers of Nepal for work. After that I am putting some expeditions into Asia, then hopefully home in times of the rains in the Kimberley
