Jessica Fox and Robin Jeffery have gotten off to the perfect start at the 2014 Oceania Championships in Penrith today.

The day began with the C1M and K1W Qualification runs which doubled as the second of three selection trials for the Australian athletes fighting for senior selection.

Fox produced the fastest K1W qualification run of 99.11 to finish more than three seconds ahead of German Melanie Pfeifer.

Crucially the qualification win saw Fox make it two from two after her first selection trial win at the Australian Open last month.

Old Bonalbo’s Rosalyn Lawrence finished third 0.15 seconds behind Pfeifer to be the second of the Australian athletes ahead of Victorian Sarah Grant.

Tasmanian teenager Kate Eckhardt continued her great start to the year recording the ninth fastest time.

Jeffery’s fist pump as he crossed the finish line to win the second selection trial summed up just how important that win was for his 2014 senior selection ambitions.

The 26 year old had a disappointing end to last month’s Australian Open, only managing the fifth fastest Australian time after a dominant performance in the heats.

The London Olympian executed a faultless second run of 94.45 to finish 0.21 seconds ahead of German Franz Anton.  Slovakian Matej Benus recorded the third fastest time of 96.09.

Penrith’s Ian Borrows finished fourth, the second highest of the Australian men with Christian Fabris third amongst the Aussies, sixth overall.

The top three in each discipline following the three selection trials will represent the Australian team at the ICF World Cups and ICF World Championships later in the year.

There is more racing to come this afternoon in Penrith with the K1M, C1W and C2M qualification runs.
