The countdown has begun to the 2014 combined Australian Open and National Slalom Championships, with just eight sleeps until racing gets underway.
A star-studded Australian contingent will compete down the 2000 Sydney Olympic course in Penrith with racing to commence on Friday 24th and conclude on Sunday 26th January.
London Olympic K1 silver medallist Jessica Fox will headline the event. Fox will be looking to avenge for last year’s second placing in the women’s K1 event after Victorian Sarah Grant recorded victory at Penrith Whitewater Stadium.
Other big names to look out for include Lucien Delfour, Rosalyn Lawrence, Robin Jeffery and William Forsythe.
A small international contingent will compete with Kiwi paddlers Michael Dawson and Luuka Jones out to try and spoil the Australians on their home course.
With Penrith set to stage the ICF Junior and U23 World Championships in April, next weekend’s event will provide those athletes with one eye on the competition to hone their skills ahead of the highly anticipated international event.
Some of the athletes to watch out for include Tasmanian duo Daniel Watkins and Kate Eckhardt, New South Wales trio Joey Croft, Noemie Fox and Angus Thompson, Western Australian Brodie Crawford and Victorians Maggie Webster, Jaxon Merritt and Tim Anderson.
The Australian Canoeing and Australian Open websites will provide coverage in the lead up to the event with daily features for each of the disciplines (C1W, C1M/C2M, K1W, K1M) to be published starting on Monday.
An official event preview will also be published on Tuesday.
