Last weekend saw the best junior slalom paddlers from around the country hit the water at Eildon, Victoria for the National Schools Wildwater Championship.
Maggie Webster was one of the best performed paddlers of the meet, winning both the Girl’s Open C1 and K1 categories, then combining with younger sister Sarah to take the Girl’s Open C2 title.
Despite competing in the Girl’s Under 15 category, Tasmanian youngster Kate Eckhardt recorded the fastest girl’s C1 time overall on Sunday, adding her Under 15 C1 title to the Under 15 K1 title she had won the previous day.
Eckhardt also combined with Oliver Gales to take out the Mixed Under 16 C2 race, while elder siblings Andrew Eckhardt and Elsa Gales teamed up to win the Open C2 race.
Andrew Eckhardt had a running battle all weekend with fellow Australian Youth Olympic Festival representative Tim Anderson, with Eckhardt winning the Boy’s Open C1 race over Anderson on Saturday before their positions were switched when Anderson won the Open K1 race on Sunday.
Daniel Watkins also had a stellar weekend, posting the fastest overall K1 slalom time on Sunday in winning the Boy’s Under 17 K1 category to go with his Under 17 C1 title from the previous day.
He then combined with younger sister Katie to finish second in the Mixed Open C2 race.
Other standout performers from the weekend included Georgia Rankin and Eliza Singleton, who won both Girl’s K1 and C1 titles in the Under 17 and Under 16 categories respectively, and Brodie Crawford who won both K1 and C1 in the Boy’s Under 16 class.
Following on from a great weekend of paddling, all the juniors will stay on in Eildon and compete in the National Championships this weekend.
