The Australian Canoe Marathon Racing Technical Committee (ACMRTC) has decided that all age groups, except those ages under 14, will be expected to portage at future Australian Canoe Marathon Championships commencing next year (2013).
The portage is a component of canoe marathon racing and a skill that is slowly in decline within Australia. Athletes, including masters, competing at world cups, world championships and other international events are expected to portage.
International Canoe Marathon Competition Rules (2011) Rule 27.5 addresses assistance allowed to a competitor suffering from a lower-body handicap at the portage.
Further information about the portage for the 2013 Australian Canoe Marathon Championships will be advised with general information about the championships. This will be placed on the Australian Canoe Marathon web page marathon.canoe.org.au and advised in championship information newsletters.
The ACMRTC encourages state canoe organisations and clubs to include portages in future canoe marathon events.
