Teacher prepares to kayak around Papua New Guinea
Expedition Class
Sam Lyons, Thursday, 24 April 2008 Tasmanian teacher Andrew Hughes is about to launch his six months, 4000kms expedition and you can follow him online.
Tasmanian teacher
Andrew Hughes has shipped his kayak
to Papua New Guinea in
preparation for a 1st May launch down the Fly
River. The extraordinary journey is expected to take up to six
months and, after nearly 4000kms, will finish at the northern border with West Papua. Students from around Australia will watch the expedition
unfold through a website.
In 2006 Mr Hughes
paddled nearly 5000 kilometres from Hobart to Thursday Island. On this expedition Andrew expects the
first 3-4 weeks paddling down the Fly River to
be some of the most challenging. Using a satellite
phone Andrew will update his position and photos to the website. Students and
teachers can also use the free climate change curriculum and other teaching
resources from the site to spice up their learning program.
The expedition is
supported by Australian Geographic
and UTAS SET. People, especially teachers and students can find out more at
www.expeditionclass.com.
