All eyes will be on the action in the men’s single kayak event at the Oceania Slalom Championships in Penrith here Sunday, with a place in the Olympic team in London on the line.

In the Men’s K1 heats on Friday, Will Forsythe of Armidale cracked the contest wide open when he finished best Aussie, ahead of Sydney’s Sam Lyons and Melbourne’s Warwick Draper, who won the first qualifying event two weeks ago.

To earn the right to be nominated to the Australian Olympic Committee for the Olympic team, an athlete needs to be ranked best in two of the qualifying events, with today’s semifinal/final phase counting towards that total.

Cooler conditions have greeted athletes competing in the three events today – the men’s K1, the women’s C1 and the men’s C2 semifinals, with the finals scheduled to be complete by about 1pm (AEDT).

Other athletes who have earned the right for Olympic nomination at the championships include Sydney’s Jessica Fox in the women’s K1, Fremantle’s Kynan Maley in the men’s C1 and Maley and Robin Jeffery in the men’s C2.

The full team is expected to be officially nominated to the Australian Olympic Committee at the end of the regatta Sunday.
