Gibbins Grabs Gold!

Lauren Fitzsimons, Right, Saturday, 20 January 2007

Phillip Gibbins was in scintilating form this evening putting in 2 clean sub-100 second runs to take out the Men's K1 title at the AYOF Slalom competition.

Gibbins was the only paddler to go under 100 seconds on the Penrith slalom course scoring a 99.79 in his first run and a very fast 99.58 in the final to blitz the field. He grabbed the gold with a total time of 199.37, 6 seconds clear of his rivals. Team mate Phillip Mingerulli gave himself every chance after a great first run, however couldn't quite match the pace, finishing in 6th. Richard Powell of the USA took the silver and Kazuki Yazawa of Japan took home the bronze.

The Chinese have continued their impressive performance today across all classes; Yingying Zou was their star performaer remaining unchallenged in the Ladies K1 taking the gold medal after leading right through the heats and semi-final runs with 2 very consistent runs and a total time of 225.78, 5 seconds ahead of Yuriko Takeshita of Japan. Emmie Barratt picked up the bronze for the Aussies with a total time of 237.40, adding to her silver medal from this event in 2005 AYOF.

The Chinese pair Peng and Teng won the C2 event with a gold medal time of 225.66 ahead of the 2006 Junior World Champions, Biso & Picco of France. The New Zealand pairing of Nicholas and Robinson finished in the bronze medal position. Both Australian crews in the Men's C2 final were unfortunate, Hageman & Horlyck picking up 152 seconds worth of penalties and Svarcs and Greaves picking up a 50 second penalty on their final runs, keeping them out of the medals in 4th and 6th.

Ethan Hodson and Ian Borrows both performed well in their 2nd AYOF appearance finishing in 5th & 6th respectively in the Men's C1 final. Casey Eichfield of the USA had a convincing win in 297.95 taking the gold medal ahead of Fenglia Chen of the People's Republic of China.
