As part of the 2005 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships-Penrith, Australian Canoeing has developed the ‘One School-One Nation’ program. This initiative strives to increase school student involvement through linking nominated schools with one of the participating nations of the 2005 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. The program has already attracted great interest from many schools in Penrith and beyond. The aim is to encourage schools selected under the program to promote the study of their “linked” team’s country- its language, culture, history, land, art, as well as its sporting traditions. Students will be encouraged to prepare messages of welcome, and to support “their” team during the World Championships event. (In addition to the Australian Team!) It is anticipated that some students will also be involved in the various World Championships ceremonies and functions, as well as having the opportunity to “come and try canoeing” as a sport. Participating students will receive free tickets to attend the World Championships and be visited by elite athletes and Riley the mascot. Under the ‘One School-One Nation’ program, school students will become ambassadors for Australia and their local area, including Penrith Valley.
