The Australian Flatwater Canoe/Kayak Team will depart Athens knowing they have been one of our best ever performing canoe/kayak teams.

The Australian team placed 7th overall in the results securing a third place ranking in the Men's Kayak field a ninth in the women's kayak field and finishing 22nd in the C1 class.

In total, Australia qualified for 5 finals including the K1 1000m, K2 1000m, K1 500m, K2 500m and the Wk4 500m. The team successfully picked up two silver medals and narrowly missed several others after finishing fourth in the K1 1000m and the K2 1000m events.

Our Women's K4 500m team finished 6th in the final to become our most successful women's K4 crew in history. In another first, Martin Marinov became our first C1 athlete to compete at Olympic level since the Tokyo Games in 1964 where Fred Wasmer and Vid Juricskay of Victoria competed in the C2 and C1 1000m.

By comparison, the Sydney 2000 Flatwater team won a bronze and a silver medal after only qualifying for 3 finals.

In a sport strongly dominated by Europeans, the Australian's have certainly made their presence felt, indicating the team will continue to improve and threaten for more medals come Beijing 2008.
