The Australian masters continued with a mixed bag of results in the canoe marathon.
The canoe marathon events wrapped up the canoeing competitions at the 2013 World Masters Games.
The first of two days of competition was for the single classes. Ages 30 to 44 competed over 26km whilst all other age groups competed over 14km. The second day of competition was in the doubles. All age groups had to complete portages. Australian masters continued with a mixed bag of results.
Day 1 Results
Darren Lee achieved a dream result winning the 45+ Men K1 to collect the gold medal. Darren completed his race distance of 14km in 1 hour 3 minutes 34.36 seconds close to 2 minutes faster than the silver medallist from France and nearly 4 minutes better than third place from Ukraine. In the same event Darren Schott finished 9th in 1:11:35.73 and David Redmond finished 11th in 1:14:13.22.
Pauline Findlay finished 4th in the 50+ Women K1 in a time of 1:27:26.01 seconds.
In the 60+ Women K1 Ann Lloyd-Green won the bronze medal in a time of 1:30:57.08 beating home fellow Australian Dianne Chellew who finished 4th in a time of 1:35:25.01.
Sinisa Janic competed in the 50+ Men K1 finishing 19th in a time of 1:28:39.76.
Day 2 Results
Di Chellew paired with Tatiana Petrova to win the silver medal in the 55+ Women K2 in a time of 1:18:34.29 just under 3 minutes behind the gold medallists. The Australian crew of Lorraine Harper-Horak and and Dallas Newman finished third in the same event with a time of 1:22:14.57.
Darren Lee continued his successes of the games adding a silver medal to his collection in the 45+ Men K2. Teaming with his partner from the canoe sprint events, Siarhey Yashin, the crew finished in a time of 0:59:38.92, 26 seconds behind the gold medal place. David Redmond and David Schott teamed together to finish 5th in the same class. Their time was 1:04:40.91.
Jerry Alderson added to his collection of medals from the World Masters Games by adding a silver in the 65+ Men K2. Teaming with Svenning Jorgensen they completed the race distance in 1:09:02.32.
Ann Lloyd-Green finished 4th in the 50+ mixed K2 with Kazimierz Kubiak. Their time was 1:23:06.76
While some athletes head home to Australia others will have a small tour of Europe before heading to the masters world cup (18 and 19 September) leading into the 2013 ICF World Canoe Marathon Championships in Copenhagen on 20 to 22 September 2013.
